Of recent, I've been wondering about what it takes (logistically/financially) to ship items by post from within Nigeria. After some meticulous googling, I managed to come up with the following resources that will definitely be of use to someone who is looking to send items by post in Nigeria.
I hope this piece comes in handy in someone's research; to save someone else the hours I spent scouring the web for these valuable but unfortunately, well-hidden resources.
1. EMS SpeedPost Online Price Calculator
With this tool, any one with access to the internet can calculate the shipping cost of their items. The variables one will need to choose/supply to use the tool are as follows: |

Region
This specifies whether the shipment is a Local or an International one.Service type
The available options are Airpost Express > Speedpost > Speedpost Economy arranged in descending order of cost. Find more details on each of the available service options here.Destination
This specifies the range of the distance between shipping source and intended destination. The options are:- Direct
- Intra-city
- Intra-state
- Intra-region
- National
Unfortunately, I have yet to come upon an document that adequately defines each of the categories. Let's agree that I owe you a trip to the post office.
Item Type
- Document: I believe this to be self-defining. However, for benefit of doubt;
- Merchandise: Any item that cannot be described as a document, e.g. Remy hair.
Weight
This specifies the weight of the shipment item. Because a sensitive scale is not a common household item around here, I tend to use a roll of Superbite (beef roll in Nigeria) as reference in estimating item weights. A roll of Superbite has weight = 90g (0.09kg).
Click the Calculate button to get the estimated cost of your intended shipment (VAT inclusive).

Click here to visit the page for more information. My belief is that the regions here apply to the Intra-region destination type option in the EMS speedpost pcalculator. Now, I'm not even sure if this service is still being offered by NIPOST. Well, let's add that to the list of reasons to visit the neighbourhood (UNILAG) post-office soon.
Funnily, this page is not accessible present on the menu of the NIPOST website. Also, it happens to be on an entirely different domain from the website. This is the main reason for my dubiousness of the page.
3. EMS Speedpost Prices Page
The location of this page is the definition of obscure and buried under rubble. Since it looks like it can be taken down any day, I decided to help you by capturing the local shipping rates.

Someone, please explain to me why this link is not on the NIPOST menu; smh. I and my fellow web developer brothers out there tend to wreak a world of confusion on the web.
EDIT 2 (25 Jan 2017): I just found this NIPOST website page which contains EMS Speedpost and EMS International shipping rates. Looks like they finally stepped up and moved the data to a non-obscure page. Also, the old link where the data previous sat is no longer accessible.

To get an accurate price quote from the DHL price calculator, you will need to have the following data on hand:
- The weight of the shipment in kg (kilogrammes)
- The width of the shipment in metric units (cm)
- The length of the shipment in metric units (cm)
- The height (depth) of the shipment in metric units (cm)
The width, length and height of the item are required to compute the volumetric weight of the item. The shipping price is then computed using the effective weight of the item. The effective weight of the item is the larger of its actual weight and volumetric weight.
5. UPS Price Calculator
Are you considering using UPS for your next shipment? Check out the UPS online shipping price calculator here to get a quote. Apart from showing you the price, the UPS delivery quote also contains an estimated delivery date, which is based on the estimated number of days which the shipment would spend in transit.

All the items that i have shipped previously had been under 0.5kg but i wanted to know the cost of shipping something greater than 1.5kg

ReplyThis seems totally shady and that amount exorbitant since the sender of the package paid anyway.
I would recommend one of the following lines of action:
- Contact CPC (Consumer Protection Cancel)
- Contact Servicom
I don't know how effective that will be but it's worth giving a try.

ReplyI spoke to a friend who runs an online e-commerce store in Lagos and ships products to customers nationwide. See his unedited response below:
It's funny you should ask that because it's one of the main challenges we are facing right now. I can only speak of the two delivery companies we have tried which are ACE (Africa Courier Express) and Aigx.
Aigx covers most cities in Nigeria and offers cash on delivery in all the cities at a decent price but I wasn't impressed with their services. Their delivery agents kept introducing themselves as Jumia delivery agents which confused our customers and our delivery rate was quite low. Also, they did very little to allow for tracking of your package.
Ace, on the other hand also does nationwide delivery but does cash on delivery only in Lagos, Abuja and PH. Which means we can only send prepaid orders to other parts of the country which most customers are still not comfortable with. However, for orders in Lagos, Abuja and PH, they are a good option and rather cheap as well.
We are in the process of signing up to use KOS, Konga's shipping division. I will let you know how that goes.

I'm really satisfied with their services. Their major downside is that, they only have pay on delivery services in only 3 cities in Nigeria. However, for security and safeness purpose most Nigerians prefer pay on delivery. I wanted to register with another company that will perform similar to ACE, but deliver cash on delivery nation wide. Please can you contact your friend again? Did she tried KOS, Konga's shipping division as she said? How are they? Please assist as usual.

Reply@Sa'adatu I wish I had an answer for that. However, I don't. I'd say you could try out with a small quantity first and see how it goes. You could also ask for what protection/insurance is available for your shipment at a NIPOST office.

ReplyHi, I did promise an update on my decision to go with NIPOST, so here it is. I'm actually the receiver. I live in Alberta and my mum has been wanting to send me dry fish (since I refused to bring some with me on my trip) and some other items. We decided to use NIPOST since it seems like the cheapest option (I think). The package was sent 9th of May 2019, I received it 31st of May 2019 even though she was assured that it would be delivered to my doorstep in less than 2 weeks. She paid about 50,000 Naira. I don't know exactly what the package weighed because it wasn't written on the box and I also found a roll of bin bag in the package, how that came about, I don't know (maybe to make the box heavier, so as to get more money from the sender or it was just a honest mistake). The good thing is that it got here, that was what I worried about...and I'm currently enjoying my dry fish.
